Hen party ideas for mixed ages

Your best mate has announced that she’s tying the knot. You’ve already bought the hen party paraphernalia. And now, it’s time to start planning the perfect hen party. But then you see the guest list and see that everyone from your bride-to-be’s mum’s bestie to her mum’s auntie’s cousin is invited. And just like that, your envision for butlers in the buff is over.

You see, planning a hen party is hard. Let alone planning it for friends and family of all ages. But luckily, we’re experts when it comes to celebrations for the big day. And here, we’ve compiled a list of our favourite hen night ideas for all ages. Plus they can all be done at home, which in the current climate will definitely get thumbs up from Nana Betty. You’re welcome.

DIY wine-tasting

Pros: Everyone likes wine, right?!

Cons: A mum after too much vino is never good

Get everyone to bring a bottle and print some fancy tasting notes off the internet. Take it in turns to taste each wine before scoring them. Make sure you’ve got some nibbles like crisps and cheese on the go too. The best thing about it? You’ve not got far to roll into bed…

Afternoon tea

Pros: There’s no waiter to judge when you ask for seconds…

Cons: There’s no waiter to tell you to stop eating

The perfect indoors hen party activity, enjoy a delicious treat in your very own venue. Pop to the shops and stock up on sandwiches, cakes and teas. Or, there’s plenty of restaurants that will box up their own. Either way, don’t forget the fizz!

At-home spa day

Pros: It’s the perfect way to get ready for the big day

Cons: You have to do the treatments.

Facials, pedicures, massages. Everyone loves a little pampering, and now the luxury spa day can come to you. Beauty therapists might not be able to work just yet but it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some proper relaxation. Baggsy not doing Nana’s pedicure…

A craft class

Pros: You’ll come away with something for the big day

Con: We can’t even draw a stickman…

From flower crown making to fascinator workshops, there are plenty of craft activities for hens. Online, you’ll find a number of businesses waiting to entertain you or why not go fully creative, and plan your own?

Nude life drawing

Pros: Your mum will love it

Cons: She’ll act like a 21-year-old again

There’s nothing like a little school girl humour to really get a hen weekend started. And when your model gets into his final position, it’s bound to get everyone in fits of giggles. Your life drawing model will even play a few lighthearted games to get the party started…

A boozy brunch

Pros: It’s the ultimate hen do activity

Cons: You have to cook it

What’s a hen weekend without a girly brunch? Whether it’s Prosecco or homemade Mimosas on the menu, there’s no other way to start your celebrations. Even better, why not give everyone a responsibility. You can be in charge of toast. Mum can set the table and the bride-to-be can taste the fizz. Perfect.

A themed dinner party

Pros: It’s perfect for Insta

Cons: Tomorrow you’ll be eating beans on toast again

Indulging in a private chef doesn’t have to break the bank balance, and you don’t need to worry about being able to walk in your heels. It’s a win-win situation. Choose your theme and your very own chef will do the rest… What will it be? Italian? Mexican? Or how about something different for every course?

Bake off tea party

Pros: You get to eat Nana’s Victoria Sponge

Cons: You’ll feel sick from all the cake

Split into teams and get ready for the ultimate bake-off. Not only is it cheap fun for everyone, but it’s a great icebreaker for those guests that might not know each other. Why not challenge each other to decorate your cake with something that reminds you of the bride-to-be?

BBQ and festival fun

Pros: It’s the only festival you’ll get to this year

Cons: You’re mum at a festival. Say no more

Weather permitting, crank up the BBQ and take your celebrations outside! Create a playlist, stock up on burgers and don’t forget to make some rum punch. Why not go all out and create a burger and cocktail station with DIY drinks and food?

A hen party dance class

Pros: It’s family fun for all to enjoy

Cons: Slut drops and the Jive weren’t meant to meet

Whether you bring in an expert (virtually, of course) or decide to do it freestyle, a good old dance is sure to get everyone ready for the evening’s celebrations. And those who don’t want to join in can put on their best Simon Cowell impression and judge from the sides. Best to leave the snake hips for those city centre clubs though, ey?

With your hen party plans well underway, it’s likely that you’ll be looking for the perfect location. And, at Hen Party Houses, they have a large selection of venues all around the UK. Why not give them a call today to start planning a weekend that everyone will enjoy?

Eco-conscious hens!

In 2020 being environmentally conscious is definitely a necessity. You can’t go online or switch on the television without seeing news about our very real climate crisis. It’s incredibly apparent that the planet is in trouble, and that we all have a part to play in improving our situation. We’ve seen people take the lead in spreading this message, in particular Greta Thunberg who is now a household name and is due to arrive in Bristol tomorrow, Friday 28th March 2020! Bristol seems to be becoming one of the more environmentally conscious cities in the UK, and we are delighted to be hosting Greta! With this all in mind we are coming to you today with a blog focusing on tips for having an environmentally friendly hen do!

If you’re here then we’re guessing you are based in the UK in which case you’re looking in the right place! The most environmentally conscious choice for a hen do is choosing a location in the UK (i.e. no need for a flight abroad!) and, even better, one which is well serviced by a train station and bus routes (i.e. no need to only drive emission pumping cars!)… like Bristol 😉! You can then enjoy your hen do without leaving a carbon footprint!

Our next tip is about decorations and games – so many hen do decorations and activities are or include single use plastic which is not a friend of our planet… so ditch the plastic sashes and tacky activities and consider something which is fun, creative AND environmentally friendly like our DIY sash or knicker decorating workshops? Or perhaps print your own tote bags which you can then re-use on your next shopping trip? Here at HenQueens we’re trying to help end the use of those single use plastic bags! Also all of our suppliers have been personally vetted by us and ALL of them are small, local businesses which is also a good thing to support!

Last but not least Bristol has some fantastic dining options. We can organise cookery classes if your gang would like to cook up their own feast! Or we can help choose a spot to eat out at – Bristol is full of fantastic vegan and vegetarian options (one of the reasons we think Bristol is becoming one of the most environmentally conscious cities in the UK!).

Why choose to Bristol for your hen do?

We LOVE Bristol. Obviously you might think we’re saying this because we live here… but the reason we live here is because we love it!

What’s so great about Bristol you ask? WELL, it has been voted both the kindest and coolest city in the UK, and it has everything you could ever want for a weekend away:

Nightlife

The nightlife scene in Bristol is incredible. Bars, pubs, comedy night, nightclubs, live music venues, dancing, festivals… the list goes on. There is genuinely something going on every night of the week (a friend got in at 4am on Monday recently?!) but the weekends are obviously the best. There is something to cater for everyone’s tastes in various areas across the city which is why it is such a perfect hen do destination. Not only that but it’s easy to get around too – taxis & Ubers are frequent and affordable. In the summer there is a festival pretty much every weekend and the city comes alive even more. And not forgetting drinks by the river as the sun sets! Trust us you cannot beat it!

Restaurants

Bristol has become one of the hubs of the UK for dining out over the last few years. You can find every type of cuisine across the city and we especially love the fact that the city caters SO well for vegetarians and vegans. People consider London the cuisine capital of the UK but Bristol is close second AND more affordable than the big smoke. Of course we know all of the best restaurants and can book you in 😉!

Arts and crafts

If you’re interested in a more arty break with your girls, then Bristol is definitely the place to be. Did you know you can go on a guided art tour of Banksy’s artwork across the city? Throw in some bars and you have the perfect Saturday! There are plenty of other arts and crafts activities we can book for you as well – sash making, life drawing classes, take your pick!

Wellbeing hen

Fancy something a bit more active? Bristol has a tonne of options for sporting activities including stand up paddleboarding on the river. Centrally located and easy to get to, you and your girl gang can go stand up paddleboarding or even do SUP yoga! The water is calm and clean and the views are fantastic. This is a wonderfully memorable activity to do on a hen do! Want something active but not quite so outdoors? Bristol is absolutely full of wonderful yoga classes which we can help organise and book for you – be it relaxing yoga, a yoga brunch or a yoga workshop.

Escape to the countryside

Last but not least it is worth pointing out that whilst Bristol is a city, it’s also surrounded by some surreal British countryside. If you fancy staying somewhere or doing an activity a little further out of town then it is incredibly easy to get in and out of Bristol if you want to. We can book you into a spa for the day and arrange transport for you; and why not take a chocolate making masterclass while you’re there too! We can plan and book it all for you!

How to choose accommodation for a hen weekend

One of the most important things to consider when planning and booking a hen do is the accommodation for your group. Whilst stag dos often consider their accommodation as the least important part of the weekend (a hostel dorm room for a tenner each seems to be the standard we’ve heard so far…) accommodation for a hen do is MUCH more important.

Hen do accommodation should be a space which reflects the bride and her squad, somewhere you can make your own for a weekend, and somewhere gorgeous where you can assemble your girls for photo opportunities, drinks, games and general fun! And let’s not forget somewhere where you can gather around the breakfast table the morning after to recount the fun from the night before…!

Also, whilst it’s crucial that the accommodation for a hen weekend is gorgeous enough to stay in, it’s often key that it’s located somewhere where it’s great to go out if you want to – then you get the best of both worlds! This is why we think The Hen House is the PERFECT option for a hen weekend, on all counts!

The Hen House has gloriously stylish interiors, sleeping 12 – 14 people in four bedrooms. You can forget about fighting over the bathroom too, as there are three bathrooms! You can really indulge yourselves in our deep-

soak tubs, and as a bonus the top floor bathroom has a free standing bath which you can see the stars from in the evening! Make sure the bride gets first dibs on that one though…. As well as the spacious bedrooms and luxurious bathrooms there is a large dining room, comfy lounge and – the pièce de résistance in the summer – a gorgeous sun-trap of a garden!

The Hen House is based off Gloucester Road, an achingly cool suburb in Bristol with edgy cafes and plenty of spots to drink and dance the night away both along Gloucester Road and further towards the centre in Stokes Croft. Beyond that you’re only a short taxi ride away from other areas of Bristol like Clifton (great for wine bars or a fancy dinner at The Ivy Brasserie), Harbourside (think brunch & drinks by the river!) and the centre of Bristol (where you can bar crawl to your heart’s content – if you do just promise us you’ll try the grapefruit margarita!).

Welcome!

Welcome to the very first blog post from the HenQueens team!

We’re incredibly excited to be launching this blog where we’ll be talking about some of our fantastic suppliers, raving about any fabulous reviews we get, and handing out tips for hen do planning. For our first blog post we’re going to be introducing you to HenQueens in case you’re new to us!

HenQueens is the brainchild of our founder and owner of the beautiful Hen House, Hannah Dean. She had lots of hen do bookings for her house and after talking to a few people she saw a gap in the market for luxury hen weekends on a budget. She also noticed a huge gap in the market for girls who wanted to experience a different sort of hen weekend, and this resulted in the birth of our Sober Sessions! We’ve had huge demand for our bespoke hen party experiences. Women are looking for something different these days, and we’re here to help!

We have now helped lots of hens celebrate their special weekends by locating and booking accommodation and activities for them! Hannah works incredibly hard to select only the best suppliers to partner with, so you can be assured that any workshop or class you book through HenQueens will be of the best quality!

Take a look at our packages, activities and accommodation and get in touch!

Lots of love, the HenQueens team x
